NEWBURGH – Playing for the first time on campus in 2018, the Mount Saint Mary College Baseball team took two from conference rival Yeshiva on Sunday afternoon, topping the Maccabees 10-3 and 13-2. Freshman Jack Goodwin scored three runs in game one, while classmate Steven Bauer recorded four hits in game two in support of Ryan Hayes who won his second game of the season.
Game 1; Mount Saint Mary 10 – Yeshiva 3
The Knights plated six runs over their first two at-bats in the opener on Sunday without the benefit of a base hit. The Mount took advantage of two walks and two hit batters in the first frame, with Goodwin and Nick Rizzo scoring on wild pitches and John Santana crossing on a double steal.
In the second inning, the Mount took advantage of three more walks and two Yeshiva errors o jump out in front 6-0. Goodwin scored his second run of the game in the second frame after crossing on a wild pitch with one out in the inning.
Mount Saint Mary did not record its first hit of the game until Christopher Introcaso ripped a single to center in the fifth inning. Goodwin picked up the Knights’ second hit of the game in the seventh with a leadoff single and later scored on a Steven Mirra sacrifice fly.
The Knights broke the game open with three more runs in their final at-bat with Kevin Edgar chasing home two runs with a double and Anthony Rizzo delivering Edgar with a one out single.
Hits in game one were event at 5-5, with Goodwin recording a single to go along with his three runs scored. Edgar finished with a base hit, two runs and a pair of RBI.
Senior Blake Keenan moved to 2-0 on the season with a strong 5.0 inning effort in the opener. He surrendered two runs on four hits, walking one and striking out eight. Jake Stewart picked up the save with 4.0 innings that saw him allow an unearned run and strikeout three.
Game 2: Mount Saint Mary 13 – Yeshiva 2
Hayes stifled the Maccabees in a complete game effort in game two. He improved to 2-1 on the season after allowing two unearned runs on three hits. He did not walk a batter in the outing and struck out seven. Hayes was perfect until the fifth inning when Yeshiva had a runner reach on an error and received an RBI double from Sonny Braha.
Mount Saint Mary opened the scoring with single runs in the second and third innings and went on to plate three runs in both the fourth and fifth before erupting for five runs in the home half of the sixth inning. Santana doubled home a run in the third and drove home another run with a sacrifice fly in the sixth. Bauer added a run scoring single for the Mount in the fifth.
Bauer finished game two a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate with a double, two runs and a pair of RBI. Nick Rizzo tripled as part of a three hit effort that included two steals and three runs scored. Tom Huvane also picked up three hits, including a double, and scored twice. Keenan rounded out the game two win with two hits and a pair of runs scored.
