IMLS Awards $2.2 Million For AAHC Program

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) announced 26 grants to museums in 18 states totaling $2,231,000 through the Museum Grants for African American History and Culture (AAHC) program. Forty organizations requested grants totaling $3,742,061.

The list of AAHC awardees provides descriptions of funded projects. IMLS made awards in 18 states: Alabama (3), California, District of Columbia, Florida (4), Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Missouri, Nebraska, New York (2), North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Tennessee (3), Texas, and Washington.

“This year, IMLS awarded a record number of grants through the Museum Grants for African American History and Culture program. Recipients included eleven museums receiving their first IMLS grant,” said IMLS Director Dr. Kathryn K. Matthew. “Now, more of the nation’s African American history, heritage, and cultural narratives will be preserved, shared, and interpreted.”

Museum Grants for African American History and Culture support activities that build the capacity of African American museums and support the growth and development of museum professionals at African American museums.

The Museum Grants for African American History and Culture program awards were part of $3.7 million in grants that IMLS announced this week. The agency also awarded $1.4 million through the Native American/Native Hawaiian Museum Services program.
