Newburgh Mayor Race is Between Democrats

NEWBURGH – The next mayor of the City of Newburgh may very well be a Democrat.
Both candidates are Democrats. No Republicans have filed petitions to run.

Current appointed Mayor Torrance Harvey and former Councilwoman Gay Lee will face off in a Democratic primary in September, but whoever loses will be on the ballot short of a challenge to their petition signatures. Harvey will appear on the Working Families Party line as well. Lee will appear on the Independence and Reform Party lines.

Harvey was appointed by the city council to serve through the end of this year following the death of Mayor Judy Kennedy. Whoever wins in November will serve just the remaining year of Kennedy’s four-year term and then must run for a full four-year term.

The only other council seat up for election this fall is councilman-at-large. Anthony Grice, who was appointed to fill that post for the remainder of this year when Harvey resigned from that position in order to be named mayor, is running on the Democratic line.

On the Republican line, former city councilman John Giudice is running for councilman-at-large.
