Leaders United to Celebrate 10th Anniversary

POUGHKEEPSIE – “I take pride in being the Chairman of Young Leaders United and have enjoyed taking part in United Way of the Dutchess-Orange Region’s overall mission,” explains Phil Lekanides, chair of the civic group. “Young Leaders United has provided me the opportunity to grow both personally and professionally through civic engagement opportunities, advocacy work and networking with like-minded, young professionals looking to make a positive change in our community. We are excited to celebrate everything we have accomplished over the last 10 years at the barbecue on August 21st, and are looking forward to what the future holds for Young Leaders United and United Way as a whole.”

United Way’s Young Leaders will celebrate their impact in the community at the Young Leaders United 10th Anniversary Barbecue on Tuesday, August 21st from 5:00 to 8:00pm at Bowdoin Park (Pavilion 2, 85 Sheafe Rd, Wappingers Falls). Tasty food and lawn games are just a few of the fun events to be enjoyed at the barbecue. Former members of Young Leaders United are encouraged to attend as well as anyone who is interested in learning more about the program. Admission is free, but preregistration is encouraged. Go to www.uwdor.org/ylubbq to register.

Thanks to the generosity of the 10th Anniversary Young Leaders United Barbecue sponsor Rhinebeck Bank, there is no charge to attend the barbecue. However, everyone is encouraged to bring a donation of brand new school supplies. Suggested items include: pencils, pens, pocket folders, and spiral notebooks. These essential items will be distributed to children at schools in Dutchess and Orange counties at the start of the school year.

Every community needs hard workers who are determined to make a difference. Members of Young Leaders United range from young college students to adults who all are dedicated to and proud of their community. They work closely with United Way staff to identify issues in the area and volunteer their time to better the world around them. The goal of Young Leaders United is to inspire advocacy, philanthropy, and volunteerism in 18 to 40-year-olds in Dutchess and Orange counties. These diligent volunteers bring a fresh and exciting spirit to the committees and events representing United Way, and help shape the next generation.
