ALFRED – Senior Bereket Watts scored two goals and freshmen Connor Doyle and Matthew Wyant scored their first career goals as the Mount Saint Mary College Men’s Soccer team scored a 5-3 win at Alfred in the consolation game of the Alfred University Tournament Sunday afternoon.
After falling behind early to the Saxons, Mount Saint Mary scored the final two goals of the first half and five straight goals overall to open a 5-1 lead. Watts got on the board with his first of the season just 47 seconds after the Knights fell behind and Connor Lynch scored for the second straight game late in the first half to send the Mount to the intermission with a one goal advantage.
Watts opened the Mount’s scoring barrage at the 13:57 mark of the contest, finishing off a pass from Fred Stark with Lynch burying a feed from Wyant at the 41:38 mark of the contest.
Coming out of halftime, Wyant found the scoring column for the first time in his career just over a minute into the second half before Watts found the back of the net for the second time in the game off a feed from Max Antisell just over 10 minutes later. The helper from Antisell marked his first career point.
Leading by three goals, Doyle finished off the scoring in the game for the Knights with his first goal of the season at the 80:33 mark of the contest. He became the seventh different Knight to score thus far in 2018 with Vito Limbardo, Jr. (Franklin Square, N.Y.) picking up the assist and his first career point.
With their scoring output, Watts and Lynch are tied for the team lead in goals with two, while Wyant surges into the team lead in assists three and points with five.
Jakup Myrtja earned his third win of the year with a pair of saves in the game for the Knights. Joe Gonzalez suffered the loss for the Saxons with seven stops.
At 3-2 overall on the season, Mount Saint Mary will return home on Wednesday for a non-conference showdown with Rutgers-Newark. Kick-off with the Scarlet Raiders is scheduled for 8:00 p.m.
