MSMC Blue Knights Swim Past Wilkes, 122-73

NEWBURGH – The Mount Saint Mary College Women’s Swimming team scored its first dual meet victory of the season on Saturday with a 122-73 triumph over Wilkes. The Mount won seven events in the meet, including two from senior Kyra McNamee.

McNamee continued her dominance for the freestyle events for the Knights on Saturday, claiming the top spot in the 1,000-yard and 100-yard races. Her distance win came in a time of 11:47.05, while her 100-yard victory came in 58.58 seconds.

The Knights took the top two spots in three events, including the top three spots in the 100-yard backstroke. Newcomer Amanda Daigle won the backstroke race in 1:12.63 and was followed by Samantha Gangemi in second with a time of 1:13.61 and Laynie Callo in third in 1:13.82.

The Knights went first and second on Saturday in both the 200-yard freestyle and 50-yard freestyle. Sophomore Daley O’Keefe won the 200-yard race in 2:16.29 and was followed by Shayla McCarroll who came home in 2:19.56. Jillian Bunch was the 50-yard winner in 27.80 seconds, with Lauren Schroeder placing second in 28.79 seconds. McCarroll added a second place finish in the 100-yard butterfly in 1:09.95, with O’Keefe taking second in the 500-yard freestyle in 6:02.99.

Sophomore Katie Barber claimed the Mount’s other individual win on Saturday, taking the top spot in the 200-yard individual medley. She topped the field with a time of 2:30.51, winning the event by 0.14 seconds. Barber finished off a strong day with a third place showing in the 500-yard freestyle, touching out in a time of 6:09.36.

Mount Saint Mary closed the day with an impressive win in the 200-yard freestyle relay. The quartet of McNamee, Schroeder, O’Keefe and Bunch posted a time of 1:51.43, winning the event by better than eight seconds.

With a 1-0 overall record, Mount Saint Mary travels to Lehman on October 27 for a 1:00 p.m. matchup with the Lightning.
