Three GOP-held State Senate seats go to Dems

MID-HUDSON – New York Senate districts held for years by Republicans John Bonacic and William Larkin, both of whom are retiring, will turn Democratic in January.

James Skoufis, the Democratic Assemblyman, defeated Republican Thomas Basile to capture the 39th District post and after the vote tallies were in, Skoufis said he will work hard for residents he will represent in the upper house.

“We’ve got election reform; we’ve got campaign finance reform we have to do; pass the child victims act, make sure people can afford to live in the Hudson Valley, make sure we have great schools that kids can be sent to. Infrastructure money needs to be brought into the district,” Skoufis said.

The 42nd Senate District post, long held by Bonacic, will now be represented by Democrat Jennifer Metzger, who defeated Republican Annie Rabbitt.

GOP Senator Terrence Murphy lost his re-election bid in the 40th District to Peter Harckham.
The Democrat-controlled Assembly and Governor Cuomo, who also won re-election, will now be joined by a Democrat-controlled Senate.

Incumbent Republican Susan Serino, who was re-elected, said to have the entire state government controlled by one political party is not good.

“I think it’s horrible,” Serino said. “I think it is going to be one party control. I have always said I don’t want to see one-party have control. It has to be checks and balances and I am really scared about what is going to happen now to our state.”

Democratic Senator David Carlucci of the 38th District easily defeated Republican former Rockland County Executive C. Scott Vanderhoef who sought to return to politics.

Republican Senator George Amedore of the 46th District also won re-election.
