Army Falls to Rutgers at Mercer Invitational

MACON, Ga. – The Army West Point softball team dropped a 12-4 decision in its final game of the Mercer Invitational on Sunday.

The Black Knights fell to 2-3 on the season, while the Scarlet Knights improved to 3-2.

Sophomore Grace Mattimore continued her success at the plate with her third multi-hit game with a double and a home run, on top of driving in three of Army’s four runs in the game. Sophomore Ally Snelling and rookie Jolie Duong added extra-base hits with a pair of doubles.

Rutgers jumped out to an early 2-0 lead when Aleah Marra homered in the second at bat of the game.

Mattimore brought the Black Knights back even with a two-RBI double in the home half of the frame, scoring Tessa Leman and Ashley Yoo.

Her power surge continued the next time she stepped to the plate as the Ashburn, Va., native clubbed her third home run of the weekend to put Army ahead, 3-2, in the third inning.

Erin Collins evened the score in the top of the fourth, however, with a solo shot of her own.

The Scarlet Knights went on to score three runs in each of the final three innings to put the game out of reach.

The Black Knights return to action on Friday with a doubleheader against CSUN at the CSUN Early Bird Classic. The games are slated to begin at 11 a.m. ET and 1:15 p.m. ET, respectively.
