Middletown First Area City to Issue Municipal IDs

MIDDLETOWN – Residents in Middletown lined up outside the city clerk’s office at City Hall the first thing last Wednesday morning to secure the new municipal identification cards.

Mayor Joseph DeStefano was among the first to be issued an ID card.

The cards are the result of a two-year effort by Nobody Leaves Mid-Hudson and its Lead Organizer, Ignacio Acevedo.

“The need is there and the trust is there,” Acevedo said. “They are giving their trust to their city right now and I think the fact that we started organizing and building those relationships with the city and our representatives allowed them to come and trust, because if they don’t trust, they would not come either. I think that trust is being built and I can see the energy in the people’s faces.”.

The cities of Poughkeepsie and Kingston, which have also approved municipal IDs, are setting up their programs.
