ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON – The Vassar College baseball team split a Liberty League doubleheader Sunday with hosting Bard College in action from Honey Field on the campus of Bard College. Vassar dropped the opening game 7-6, before exploding for a 14-3 win in game two.
Game 1 – Bard 7, Vassar 6
Bard’s Evan Richardson allowed only five hits and three walks, and the Raptors pushed across three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to make the difference.
Junior Daniel Bonfiglio scored the opening run on a Bard throwing error at the top of the second and then the Brewers scored three times in the fifth inning. Matt Martino doubled to right field to allow Bryan Rubin and Connor Levchuck to reach home. Matt Schwartz hit a single which Martino scored on.
With the Brewers up 4-0, Bard went scored four-straight runs before Vassar took a 6-4 lead in the ninth. The Raptors made the late comeback, scoring three in the bottom of the ninth to take the win.
Matt McGannon pitched 5.1 innings, allowing nine hits and four runs. He had four strikeouts. Bard’s Alex Bunnell had the win and is 3-0 this season.
Game 2 – Vassar 14, Bard 3
The Vassar bats heated up in the second game, with the team recording 17 total hits and scoring in all but one inning. A Bard throwing error allowed Jason Salerno to score the opening run.
Then Sam Brinster singled to get Martino to home. Bard would score once in the first, but Vassar erupted for nine-straight runs until the fifth inning. In the sixth, Brinster recorded his first-career home run, and then Rubin doubled in the seventh to get Alex Wiseneski the run. Bard tallied one more run in the seventh but Vassar’s lead was too much.
Joe Conti records the win and is 1-0 this season. He allowed just three hits and one walk. He also had six strikeouts.
