Vassar Soccer Updended at Oneonta State

ONEONTA – The Vassar College women’s soccer team suffered a narrow 3-2 loss on Saturday afternoon, falling at Oneonta State in non-conference action. The victory moves the homestanding Red Dragons to 2-1-1 overall, while the Brewers slip to 2-2-1 on the young season.

Oneonta State opened the game’s scoring in the 22nd minute as Christina Kornfeld sent a cross from right to left. Her pass landed on the foot of Seaver Lipshie, who buried it past VC keeper Fiona Walsh. The Red Dragons moved the margin to 2-0 in the 35th minute after Kelsey Smith sent a long shot into the net from 30 yards out.

The Brewers got on the board, cutting the deficit to one (2-1) just over a minute later as sophomore Emma Tanner headed the ball in on a pass from classmate Claire Zickl. Vassar, which owned a 10-8 advantage in shots for the opening half, was unable to grab the equalizer in the stanza.

Lipshie added an insurance goal for the Red Dragons in the 54th minute of the second half, scoring the unassisted tally off a free kick. The Brewers answered less than 30 seconds later as junior Skylar Herrera-Ross sent a shot in that deflected off a defender and into the goal.

The scoring chances for the two squads was plentiful over the remaining time, with each putting 10 shots on goal, however neither would find the back of the net again. Oneonta State owned an 8-6 margin in corner kicks.

For the Red Dragons, Claire Lepper earned the victory with eight saves, while Walsh notched seven stops for the Brewers.

Vassar returns to action on Wednesday when it travels to Montclair State for a 7pm match against the Red Hawks.
