Marist Falls in First Meeting With Cornell

POUGHKEEPSIE – The Marist football team was defeated by Cornell on Saturday, 21-7, at Tenney Stadium on Homecoming & Reunion Weekend.

Mike Catanese’s one-yard touchdown run got Cornell on the scoreboard at the 5:10 mark of the first quarter.

Catenese added a 42-yard touchdown run 36 seconds into the second quarter, as Cornell went up 14-0.

On Marist’s next drive, the Red Foxes faced a 3rd-and-11 from the Cornell 46 when red-shirt sophomore Luke Strnad completed a 51-yard pass to fifth-year senior Joe Petro to the Marist 3. On the next play, red-shirt freshman Hunter Cobb’s three-yard touchdown run got Marist on the scoreboard.

An 11-yard touchdown run by Harold Coles with 2:08 left in the third quarter gave Cornell a two-score advantage back.

On all three of its drives in the third quarter, Marist drove inside the Cornell 30, but had a loss on downs. Twice in the game, Marist reached the Cornell 1 but was unable to score.

This was the first all-time meeting between Marist and Cornell.

This is the second time an Ivy League school played at Marist, following Columbia’s trip to Poughkeepsie in 2017.

Cornell is the first of two Ivy League foes to come to Marist this season. Dartmouth will visit Poughkeepsie on Saturday, Oct. 19.

Marist closes out its three-game home stand Saturday with a visit from Pioneer Football League foe Drake. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
