City Winery is Crushing Hard on the Hudson Valley

MONTGOMERY – Over 10 tons of grapes were delivered on Friday to City Winery’s new location at the historic Montgomery Mills for its first Fall Crush Event, providing a glimpse into the grape to glass pipeline City Winery is known for.

Many of the staff members of City Winery spent the day crushing crops for its Syrah, Pinot Noir and Petite Sirah wines that will be served in its new tasting room opening this fall.

“We oversee the process from start to finish and make sure that the grapes are not overhandled once they reach the tanks for fermentation,” Chief Winemaker David Lecomte says. “We want to make sure the grapes stay mostly uncrushed when they reach the tank because the broken skins bring the risk of oxidation and loss of some of the aromatic qualities in the wine.”

The grapes will ferment in stainless-steel tanks and eventually pressed and stored in French or American oak barrels. The wines will be closely monitored by the winemaking team throughout their development and maturity until each unique flavor profile is reached. Soon enough the barrels will be tapped and served onsite for visitors to enjoy while taking in the beautiful surroundings and rich history of the historic Montgomery Mills in the heart of the Hudson Valley.

“We love this time of year when we get to be extremely hands-on with our wines,” says Owner and CEO Michael Dorf. “We also want the public to have the opportunity to experience the winemaking process, so we offer the opportunity to create your own barrel of wine. It gives individuals the chance to experience all facets of the winemaking process, from the initial grape crush to creating a custom blend and private label.”

City Winery is already planning for its Spring Crush Event in 2020 where members are invited to participate.
