Mount Suffers Dual Meet Loss at Staten Island

STATEN ISLAND – Competing in its first dual meet of the season, the Mount Saint Mary College Women’s Swimming team was dealt a 143-101 road loss at the College of Staten Island. Junior Shayla McCarroll led the Mount with a pair of individual victories on the day.
McCarroll had a strong afternoon for the Knights, scoring wins in the 100 and 200-yard backstroke events. Her initial win of the day came in a time of 1:07.08 with her 200-yard victory showing a time of 2:27.42.

Fellow junior Daley O’Keefe scored a win for the Knights in the 200-yard freestyle and also picked up a runner-up finish in the 200-yard backstroke. He win in the second individual event of the day came in a time of 2:15.31 and she followed McCarroll in the backstroke race, showing a time of 2:33.56.

Senior Taylor Hollis and junior Katie Barber also turned in strong swims on Saturday with each picking up a pair of second place finishes. Hollis was the runner-up in the 100 and 200-yard breaststroke events in 1:24.65 and 3:06.03, while Barber earned second place points in the 200-yard butterfly in 2:30.49 and the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 6:11.43.

Samantha Gangemi collected a second place finish in the 100-yard butterfly on Saturday with a time of 1:11.41, with a pair of newcomers picking up runner-up points as well for the Knights. Freshman Emily Gursky finished second in the 100-yard backstroke and took third in the 50-yard freestyle, while fellow freshman Kristen Dwight placed second, just ahead of Gursky, in the 50-yard freestyle.

The Mount started the afternoon in strong fashion with a victory in the 200-yard medley relay. The team of McCarroll, Hollis, Barber and O’Keefe topped the field with a winning time of 2:10.01.

At 0-1 on the season, the Knights will make a return trip to Sarah Lawrence to open Skyline Conference competition against the Gryphons on November 9. Events are scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m.
