Advancing to Capital Region Spelling Bee

SAUGERTIES – Saugerties Central School District’s best spellers competed on Thursday, December 12, in the annual District-wide Spelling Bee, with Samuel Cushman, a Grade 8 Jr. High School student, emerging as the winner and Pierce Tierney, a Grade 5 student from Riccardi Elementary School, taking second place.

Cushman took the top prize in Round 14 for correctly spelling the word “Himalayan.” Cushman is not new to the competition field. He took first place in Grades 6 and 7, and took second place when he was in Grade 4.

Cushman and Tierney will both be going on to represent Saugerties in the Capital Region Spelling Bee at Proctors Theater in Schenectady, New York on February 4.
