Last-Second Shot Sends Canisius Past Marist

BUFFALO – A three-pointer by Canisius’ Majesty Brandon with 5.1 seconds remaining lifted the Golden Griffins to a 66-65 victory over Marist in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference on Sunday afternoon at the Koessler Athletic Center.
There were seven lead changes in the game’s first eight minutes.

An 8-0 run staked the Red Foxes to an eight-point lead at the 7:39 mark of the first half, as they held the Golden Griffins scoreless for 3:45.

Canisius held Marist without a field goal for the final 4:14 of the first half. The Golden Griffins closed the half on an 8-2 run, and led 32-31 after the first 20 minutes.

Canisius scored the first four points of the second half, which forced a Marist timeout at the 18:24 mark.

A 9-0 run gave Marist its first lead of the second half, which included three-pointers by Tyler Saint-Furcy and Jack Cavanaugh, plus a three-point play by Michael Cubbage.

A three-pointer by Braden Bell with 7:45 remaining gave Marist its largest lead at 55-46.

Brandon’s three-pointer with 18 seconds remaining brought the Golden Griffins to within two. After a missed free throw, Brandon’s three-pointer with 5.1 remaining accounted for the game’s final points.

After three straight road games, Marist returns home on Friday, Feb. 7 to face Saint Peter’s. It will be the Red Foxes’ first game at McCann Arena since Jan. 22.
