Army Black Knights Split Doubleheader With Lehigh

BETHLEHEM, PA. – The Army West Point softball team split its Saturday doubleheader with Lehigh at Leadership Park. Army took the first game 4-2, but fell in the second contest with the Mountain Hawks, 8-3.

In the first game, Lehigh jumped to a 1-0 lead through the first inning of play. The Black Knights evened the score in the third with Jolie Duong scoring Julianna LaRusso on an RBI double up the middle.

Lehigh loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the fourth, but the Black Knights were able to get out of the inning unscathed. Then in the next half inning, Taylor Drayton sent a two-run shot over the left field fence with two outs to give the Black Knights the 3-1 lead. Lehigh managed to get one back in the bottom of the fifth.

Angelina Bebek added an insurance run in the top of the seventh with a solo shot to left field. The Mountain Hawks made things interesting in the bottom of the seventh, loading the bases with one out. Duong, who pitched a complete game, struck out the next two batters to improve her record in the circle this season to 2-0.

In the latter half of the doubleheader, Megan Muffett opened the scoring with a solo homer to right center field in top of the second. However, Lehigh tacked on six runs in the bottom half of the inning to create some separation. The Mountain Hawks added two more runs in the fourth to go up 8-1.

Ally Snelling had a 2RBI single up the middle, which scored Drayton and Yawaywish Laupsa-Briones in the bottom of the seventh, but Lehigh was able to fight off Army’s hopes of a late rally.
