Dutchess County Sheriff Wants to Diversify Agency

POUGHKEEPSIE – Dutchess County Sheriff Butch Anderson is recruiting new deputies in an attempt to diversify his agency. He is currently recruiting part-time deputies.

Undersheriff Kirk Imperati said as part of the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office Police Modernization and Reform Plan, “we are beginning our recruitment process for the upcoming civil service exam in September as well as a Police Academy in late August of this year. The Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO) is in a unique situation in which we have a part-time squad of deputy sheriffs. We currently have numerous vacancies on our part-time squad and would like to fill up to 12 positions for the August academy.”

Anderson said the “demographics of a law enforcement agency should be reflective of the community it serves.” The 50-year veteran of law enforcement also said he “recognizes that increased diversity within a police agency helps to improve trust and legitimacy between the police and the community.”

The DCSO law enforcement division currently has 101 sworn members that are deputy sheriffs/police officers. Part-time candidates are not required to be hired from a competitive civil service examination. Successful applicants will begin the police academy on August 23.
Applicants must be 20 years old, able to meet the medical and physical fitness standards, be a United States citizen, and possess a valid driver’s license. After appointment, the new deputies will have to complete 60 college credits within five years of appointment.
