Marist Football Thwarts Stetson, Moves to 2-0

POUGHKEEPSIE – The Marist football team cruised to a 34-3 home victory over Stetson in a Pioneer Football League game at Tenney Stadium on Saturday.

Marist never trailed in the game, striking first with Luke Paladino’s 29-yard field goal past the midpoint of the first quarter.

Hunter Cobb then scampered into the end zone from one yard out with 1:33 left in the stanza, and two plays into Stetson’s ensuing possession, Kyle Coffindaffer returned an interception 31 yards for a pick-six, his first-career interception, to put Marist on top 17-0 just 15 minutes in.

Dwayne Menders caught a 13-yard touchdown from Austin Day in the second quarter to extend the Red Foxes’ lead to 24-0 before Stetson’s Cameron Gills kicked a 27-yard field goal to get the Hatters on the board.

Marist’s defense held Stetson off the scoresheet in the second half, while Brandon Lysick notched his first-career touchdown on a six-yard pass from Day 4:35 to go in the third quarter.

Paladino’s 41-yard field goal with 9:38 remaining closed out the scoring.

Day threw for 276 yards and two touchdowns while completing 22 of 31 passes (76 percent). Menders caught 10 passes for 142 of those yards and a touchdown.

Marist forced two Stetson turnovers, and did not commit a turnover.

Marist is 2-2 overall and 2-0 in the PFL.

Marist hits the road for a date with Dayton on Saturday, Oct. 16 at noon
