Vassar Volleyball Falls in League Action

POTSDAM – The Clarkson women’s volleyball team posted solid numbers in aces on the day as they bested Vassar by a 3-0 (25-16, 25-6, 25-13) in Liberty League action Saturday afternoon at Alumni Gymnasium. The Golden Knights move to 12-7 overall with a 3-2 mark in league play, while the Brewers are now 5-8 and 1-3 in the Liberty League.

In the opening set, Clarkson jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead as Emma Baxter knocked off three straight aces to give the Knights an early lead. Clarkson quickly extended its advantage but Vassar cut the margin to four (14-10) forcing a timeout by the home team.

A pair of kills from senior utility Sara Ehnstrom and a strike from rookie hitter Hailey Hayes helped eventually close the deficit to 20-16, but Clarkson closed out the set with five straight for the 25-16 set win.

The second set was reasonably close in early going as Clarkson led 9-4, but the Green and Gold rolled to an easy win by claiming 16 of the final 18 points. The third set saw Vassar get back on its feet, but the Brewers were unable to battle back as Clarkson continued to roll in the set for the match victory.

Graduate student Gillian Kurtic posted 14 kills against just one error on 20 swings and freshman Allyson Treichel was nearly as efficient with 12 kills and just one miscue on 22 attempts. Baxter scored six aces from the service line and also added 14 digs while Isabelle Crow notched a double-double with 34 assists and 11 digs.

For Vassar, rookie outside hitter Morgan Miller led the team with five kills and also tied for the team lead with eight digs, along with rookie libero Maya Levine. Senior setter Madison Wilson recorded 15 assists. Ehnstrom and Hayes each posted four kills, while Ehnstrom also added two block assists on the afternoon.

Vassar returns to the court on Wednesday in a 6pm Liberty League match at Bard.
