The Pioneers Take Time to Enjoy Their Spirit Week

POUGHKEEPSIE – A week of fun festivities, capped by a pep rally, leading to the Pioneer’s Homecoming game against the visiting Horace Greeley Quackers Saturday, October 9th.

Saturday’s game was a big one for the team. If they win, PHS would be co-league champs and have the No. 1 seed in the playoffs, Coach Mark Bianco said. The team, now 3-1, faces an opponent that is 4-0. If the Pioneers win, they would then have home field advantage.

“The key to our success is to stay focused, be mentally prepared and do our jobs. We’ll rely heavily on what got us here: Sam Moore, Nigel Whitaker, Dahomey Francis and our offensive line.”

The Quackers bring a strong, fast quarterback and have a good running back and defensive end that the Pioneers will have to watch out for, Bianco said, adding that he hopes the community turns out for the game.

“I’m proud of them. It is an honor to coach them. Our seniors (15) and I have been together since their modified days. It is special to be with them on homecoming and Senior Day,” he said.

Poughkeepsie High School students and staff celebrated all week with Team Sports Day Monday; Twin Day Tuesday; Disney/Marvel Character Day Wednesday; Throwback Day Thursday and School Spirit Day today.

Students had opportunities to vote on the Homecoming Court both virtually and in-person. And, the court is: Freshman Lady Sonia Gutierrez-Mendoza, Freshman Lord Andrew Gaffney Jr., Sophomore Dutchess Layla Martin-Sellers, Sophomore Duke Jalen Lee, Junior Princess Brazil Williams, Junior Prince Deavin Moore, Senior Queen Kerena Rattray and Senior King Daniel Luis-Gabriel.

Sports teams included in the pep rally celebration were varsity cross country, varsity girls swimming, JV boys soccer, JV girls soccer, JV girls volleyball, varsity girls volleyball, varsity cheerleading and varsity football.
