Army Ousted by Lehigh in Patriot League Opener

WEST POINT – Army West Point Softball (8-20, 0-1) dropped its first Patriot League game of the season to Lehigh (8-11, 1-0) 6-1, on Saturday afternoon, at the Softball Complex.

Kayla Edwards led the way at the plate going 3-for-3 at the plate with one run, one RBI and one home run. Leila Hurst followed with one double. Jolie Duong (4-6) was battling in the circle dealing four strikeouts in seven innings of work.

Though Lehigh’s offense had a strong start, Jolie Duong set an earlier tone in the circle, allowing no runs in the first half inning. She struck out the final batter to strand two Mountain Hawks on base and get Army to the batter’s box.

Kayla Edwards claimed the first home run at the Softball Complex of the season firing the ball over the left field fence. The sophomore recorded the lone run for Army. Leila Hurst followed with a double but was left on base as Army headed back to the field.

It was a battle of the pitchers for the next four innings as neither team was able to get a run on the board. Lehigh broke the silence in the top of the sixth inning firing off three runs off two hits and two errors to take a 3-1 lead over Army.

Edwards tried to get the bats going in the bottom of the sixth with a leadoff single down the left field line. Two batters later, Lauren Little singled down the right field line to get runners on the corners. Army could not capitalize on the runners and left the two on base.

Lehigh’s bats kept its momentum going in the top of the seventh as the Mountain Hawks scored three runs on four hits and one error. Army could not rally in the bottom frame and fell 6-1 to Lehigh.

The second game of the doubleheader was brought to a hault at the top of the fourth inning due to weather and field conditions and will resume on Sunday, March 27, prior to the single game of the series. A time has not been determined yet.
