Family Walks, Raising Awareness For Down Syndrome

CAMPBELL HALL – On Saturday, March 20, The Lisi family of the Town of Newburgh, joined by friends and family, along with the family dog, took their place in their Annual National Down Syndrome Day Walk at Campbell Hall’s Thomas Bull Memorial Park.

Walking a symbolic 3.1 miles, equaling the exact, March 21 date of National Down Syndrome Day, the mileage also further stands for the three copies of the 21st Chromosome that characterizes people who have Down Syndrome. Adding more fun to the afternoon stroll was also the unique sock combination worn by participants. Sporting mismatched socks, revealing the authentic beauty of those with Down Syndrome, all on hand were smiles, proudly celebrating the extremely accomplished Valoree Lisi (pictured to the right of the sign.) Valoree, a graduate of Newburgh Free Academy, is a cafeteria worker for the Newburgh Schools, volunteers, as well as does advocacy work, helping her mother fight for the rights of special needs children. She is also an accomplished pianist and has published a cookbook. To top it off, Valoree is involved with supporting others with Down Syndrome, attending Annual State Conferences aimed at supporting laws protecting their rights for equality in all realms of life.

Following the walk, the festivities continued, as several gathered at the Lisi home for refreshments, laughter, and gratitude, honoring Valoree as well as all the special people who have Down Syndrome and their priceless, much appreciated contributions.
