MSMC Knights Split Skyline Set At Old Westbury

FARMINGDALE – The Mount Saint Mary College Baseball team took to the road Saturday afternoon, splitting a Skyline Conference doubleheader at Old Westbury. The Knights suffered a tight 8-7 loss in game one in eight innings before rebounding for an impressive 14-5 game two triumph.

Saturday’s split moves Mount Saint Mary to 11-15 overall on the season and 6-8 in conference play, while Old Westbury stands at 8-20 overall and 6-10 in conference action.

Game 1: Old Westbury 8 – Mount Saint Mary 7 – (F/8)
The Knights got off to a quick start in the opener, grabbing a 3-0 lead after one at-bat. Following singles from Anthony Franco and Jack Goodwin to start the inning, Dominick Marzigliano connected on a three-run home run.

The Mount Saint Mary lead grew by a run in the second when Goodwin chased home Devin Tait with a two-out single.

The four-run advantage stood until the bottom of the fourth when the Panthers plated five runs to grab a 5-4 advantage.

Jamal Ritter tripled home two runs to knot the score at 4-4 before Jacob Taormina drove in Ritter with a single to give Old Westbury its first lead of the day.

The Knights got the game tied at 5-5 in the fifth when Coleman Barnes homered with two outs in the inning.

Mount Saint Mary plated two more runs in the sixth inning to regain a 7-5 lead. Tait singled home Ryan Lutinski, who doubled to start the frame, and Franco singled home Tait with the inning’s second run.

Old Westbury got a run back in the sixth on an Oscar Fajardo infield single and knotted the score at 7-7 in the bottom of the seventh when Ritter shot a single to center field that delivered Jamie Barrios.

After the Mount went down in order in the eighth, Old Westbury got a two-out single from Jacob Ford to rally the Panthers to the game one victory.

For The Knights
Franco, Goodwin and Marzigliano all finished game one with two hits a run scored and an RBI.

Marzigliano doubled and homered and drove in three runs.

Barnes homered, scored and drove in one run.

Lutinski doubled and scored a run.

Tait recorded a hit, scored two runs and drove in one for the Mount.

Liam Horan made the start and worked 3.2 innings, allowing five runs on eight hits.

Mike Scotto allowed one run in 2.1 innings of relief work.

Michael DiGiovanni suffered the loss, allowing one earned run in 1.2 innings. He allowed two hits, walked two and struck out a pair of Panthers.

Game 2: Mount Saint Mary 14 – Old Westbury 5
The Knights started quickly again in game two, plating three runs again in their first at-bat.
Barnes singled home two runs in the opening frame and Liam Merlin delivered Marzigliano on a run scoring groundout.

After Old Westbury got two runs back in the home half of the first, the Knights plated a run in the second before erupting for seven runs in the top of the fourth.

DiGiovanni scored on a wild pitch in the second to give the Knights a 4-2 advantage.

In the big fourth, the Mount totaled six hits, including three for extra bases.

Franco started the inning with a triple and later drove in a run with a double.

Barnes added another run scoring single in the inning with Merlin driving in his second run of the game with a walk.

DiGiovanni and Tait singled home runs in the frame with Robert Brust delivering a pair of runs with a double.

Mount Saint Mary piled on three more runs in its final at-bat. Barnes connected on his second home run of the day, a two-run blast, with DiGiovanni singling home a run with two outs in the frame.

For The Knights
DiGiovanni went a perfect 5-for-5 in the game with two runs scored and two RBI.

Franco finished up 3-for-4 with a double and a triple, adding two runs and an RBI.

Goodwin collected two hits and scored twice.

Barnes closed his big day 3-for-4 with a home run, two runs and five RBI.

Brandon Nolasco, Merlin and Tait all finished with a hit and a run scored. Merlin drove in a pair of runs.

Brust went 2-for-5 with a double and two RBI.

Matthew Borriello moved to 4-2 on the season after working 6.0 innings. He allowed four earned runs on 10 hits and struck out one.

John Morehead threw a scoreless inning of relief.

Mount Saint Mary is off until April 24 when it travels to USMMA.
