Gibson Places Third In Discus With Record

PHILADELPHIA, PA – Senior Jamir Gibson set the program and service academy record in the discus throw en route to finishing third at the Penn Relays.

Gibson added to his historic outdoor season after a record-setting indoor campaign. He has been dominant in the both the shot put and discuss this spring; he has finished in the top three in all six discus events he competed in, including finishing first in the Star Meet. Gibson save his best for last at the historic Penn Relays. His final throw landed 59.04 meters to move him from fifth to third.

“We decided to prioritize training and rest this weekend as we look ahead to the conference championship. But we did want to get Jamir (Gibson) one more high-level competition in the discus, so we sent him to the Penn Relays and he took advantage of the opportunity. He was sitting in fifth place for the majority of the competition, and then on his last throw he hit it just right and moved up to third with 59.04m (193 feet). That mark broke his own school record and the service academy record for the event.

“He now owns the service academy record for the indoor shot, the indoor weight, and the discus. He is the most dominant male thrower in the history of the service academies, and he has the rest of this post season to add to his legacy. Army now owns the service academy record for all six of the throwing events (2 indoors and 4 outdoors). Five of the six records have been set in the last two years. Our throws group is the best that it has ever been,” said coach Mike Smith.

The Black Knights will compete in the 2022 Patriot League Outdoor Championships in Annapolis, Md. from May 6-7.
