iPark Asbestos Cleanup Under Way

LAKE KATRINE – Nearly 30 years ago, IBM closed its plant and campus in Lake Katrine. The next owner, TechCity, left large mounds of asbestos following the demolition of some buildings.

Now the campus has a new owner, iPark 87, and an agreement with the EPA will now ensure the asbestos will be removed by the end of the year.

Senator Charles Schumer, taking a victory lap in the Hudson Valley following his leadership to get a new clean energy bill passed recently, made an announcement Friday about the asbestos removal and another development about the campus’ future.

“Thanks to the cleanup and the federal bill we just got passed, Zinc8, a leader in cutting edge green technology, has signed a letter of intent, plans to come to Ulster County and bring 500 new, good paying jobs right here to iPark87,” he said.

The Senate majority leader said the “mountains of asbestos will be gone the next time we are here. The cleanup, I called for at this site about a year ago, is finally underway. This once pollution-ridden site will be a distant memory.”
