The Marist Volleyball Team Collects Two Victories

ATLANTA, GA – The Marist volleyball team collect two victories on their opening day against Georgia State and Belmont. The Red Foxes defeated Georgia State, 3-0, and Belmont 3-1.

Match One | Marist 3, Georgia State 0
Marist got off to a quick start in set one, leading 10-3 after five attack errors from Georgia State. The Red Foxes had another 4-0 run from two kills and a service ace from Jordan Newblatt. Georgia State rallied later to cut the lead to three points, the Red Foxes would finish off set point to win by a score of 25-21.

Set two the Red Foxes fell behind early, chasing Georgia State 10-4. Marist battled back to tie the set at 12 apiece. The Red Foxes would hold the advantage over Georgia State to win the second set 25-23.

The Red Foxes fall behind in the third set again by four points, to soon battle back and tie the match at nine. The Panthers and Red Foxes would have five lead changes before the Red Foxes would remain ahead of the Panthers, winning set three by a score of 25-21.

Match One Stats
Jordan Newblatt led the Red Foxes with 14 kills with a .294 hitting percentage.

Sasha van der Merwe had seven kills and Gabrielle Heller collected eight kills.

McKinley Fox record 28 assists in game one against Georgia State.

The Red Foxes had 34 kills total.

Match Two | Marist 3, Belmont 1
The Red Foxes secured set one by a score of 25-18. Marist took an early lead 11-4.

Belmont would battle to cut the lead from nine points to five points, the Red Foxes held the advantage over Belmont.

Set two was a close matchup between the two teams. The Red Foxes defeated the Bruins in a comeback win, by a score of 25-22.

The Bruins extend the match with a win in the third set against the Red Foxes. Belmont’s offense and defense was strong, winning the set by a score of 25-16.

The Red Foxes closed out the match, with a win in the fourth set. Marist came out strong in the fourth set, with a 7-1 scoring run to extend their lead. Winning the match against Belmont by a score of 25-13.

Match Two Stats
Sasha van der Merwe tallied 20 kills and two service aces. Van der Merwe finished the match with a hitting percentage of .273.

McKinley Fox collected a total of 42 assists, totaling her with over 2,000 career assists. Fox became the ninth player in program history to reach this milestone.

Jordan Newblatt had eight kills. Three Red Foxes had seven kills total against Belmont: Alyssa White, Gabrielle Heller and Vanessa Zolg.

Zolg and White also had four blocks apiece.
