NEWBURGH – Powered by a pair of goals in each half, the Vassar College men’s soccer team posted a 4-0 victory at Mount Saint Mary College on Sunday afternoon. The win gives the Brewers their first of the young season, moving to 1-1-0, while the Knights slip to 0-2-0.
Vassar came out flying in the opening half, peppering shots on the Knights goal, including a bottom centered save by Caesar Martinez on senior Kyle Lopes’ shot. The Brewers finally broke through in the 23rd minute as a cross from senior Kinlay Watkins fed to sophomore Danny Berry for the 1-0 advantage.
Just before the end of the opening half of action, sophomore Derek Sando tipped the score in a 2-0 favor for the visitors, burying a feed from classmate Jackson Hall in the 43rd minute of action.
Second half action saw the Brewers continued to press, Sando making it a 3-0 score in the 79th minute with an unassisted goal. The Brewers made it a 4-0 game in the 83rd minute as senior captain Owen Fauth capitalized on a penalty kick opportunity.
Vassar’s defense, paced by senior captain and goalie Eric Wnorowski, was outstanding, limiting the Knights to just seven shots in the game and two shots on goal. Wnorowski made two stops for the victory. In the opposite net, Martinez suffered the loss with three saves as Vassar posted 21 shots, including seven on goal for the contest.
