NEWBURGH – Senator James Skoufis (D-Hudson Valley) joined City of Newburgh and Orange County officials on Thursday to announce the kickoff of a new free bus fare program along Newburgh Area Transit routes, including paratransit services. Routes included in the program are:
* Broadway West – Route 17K from the Broadway & Liberty St. intersection to key shopping destinations along 17K and Route 300 in the Town of Newburgh, such as Target and Adam’s Fairacre Farms.
* Crosstown North – Stretching between Montefiore St. Luke’s and Cornwall Hospitals.
* Northside – Including stops at Mt. Saint Mary College and Mid Valley Mall.
* Southside – Including apartment complexes and residential areas south of Broadway, and the Newburgh Ferry.

The county estimates the program will enable 30,000 free trips for local residents.

“I’m delighted to spread some good will and encourage local commerce by expanding access to public transportation in Newburgh,” said Senator Skoufis. “No matter the weather, folks still need to get to and from appointments and do their holiday and grocery shopping. This program was a true collaboration between our local and county partners and could serve as a pilot for expanded access all year round throughout Newburgh and across Orange County.”

“This program is designed to enhance residents’ access to the diverse and expanding shops, markets, and restaurants in the greater Newburgh area,” said Orange County Executive Steven M. Neuhaus. “It also provides an opportunity for residents to utilize and learn more about the Newburgh Area Transit system. I am proud of this collaboration between the County’s Planning Department and Senator Skoufis which benefits the community.”

“This important pilot program will provide local riders and commuters with an available, cost-free option to finish their holiday shopping, visit relatives, and address personal needs like doctor’s visits,” said Senator-elect Rob Rolison (R-Poughkeepsie, Newburgh). “I commend Senator Skoufis as well as our local and county partners on their hard work in securing the funding to cover the free bus fares. I look forward to working with them to continue to enhance the quality of life and lower the cost of living in the City of Newburgh and across our mid-Hudson region.”

“Local residents know we’ve had a deep need for better transportation for many years, whether that’s the need for improved bus shelters, improved routes, or even Sunday service,” said Orange County Legislator Kevindaryán Luján. “While this free fare program is a pilot, it’s a significant one, directly impacting individuals who are struggling to pay for basic needs, to get to work, or to see loved ones. Thank you, Senator Skoufis, for once again delivering for the City of Newburgh.”
