POUGHKEEPSIE – A design by Poughkeepsie High School student Maven Frederick, who is enrolled in the graphic design class in the Career & Technical Institute at Dutchess BOCES, was chosen to be the official logo of the 2023 Fishkill Polar Plunge sweatshirt.
The event on Saturday, Feb. 18, at Sharpe Reservation will raise money to support Special Olympics New York athletes. The goal is to raise $250,000 in this 25th anniversary event.
“I’m super honored and it’s really crazy to know that when you buy a sweatshirt, it’s going to have my design on it,” Frederick said.
Frederick shared how she came up with the event logo, which includes a polar bear.
“When I think of polar plunge, I immediately think of penguins or polar bears,” she said.
“From the past logos, it seemed the polar bear had a big impact on what people think of when they see it and I didn’t want to take away from that.”
Frederick and her classmates in Stephen Lawson’s graphic design class were assigned to come up with the logo for the polar plunge.
“I’m proud of Maven. I’m proud of all of them. That’s part of the program and what we do,” said Lawson.
“It elevates the program in so many ways. It elevates the validity of what we do in here and Maven now has a professional portfolio piece that will take her far. They all do – that’s part of the process.”
Frederick has been doing traditional drawings for 10 years, and became interested in digital art when she received an iPad with the Procreate app for her 16th birthday. She decided to take CTI’s graphic design class to learn more.
“This is a great class because it teaches you the importance of logos,” she said. “It really helps you understand the thought process between all these companies that you see.”
