Vassar Suffers Tight Loss to Swarthmore

SWARTHMORE, P.A. – The Vassar College Women’s Tennis team fell in a hard fought 4-5 match against Swarthmore on the road on Sunday. The Brewers fall to 3-2 overall while the Garnet improve to 4-0 overall.

At the top flight in doubles, Erica Stutz and Nathalie Williams earned an 8-3 victory over junior Sofie Shen and freshman Erin McCusker followed by rookie Iris Li and sophomore Macey Dowd winning 8-3 at two against Oviya Kumaran and Spencer Watts. Senior Tatum Blalock and sophomore Elyse Duley picked up a hard-fought 8-7 victory at three over Kathleen Shiffer and Jenny Lewis to earn a 2-1 victory in doubles action.

In singles action, Williams topped Blalock 6-1, 6-0 at the top flight followed by McCusker defeating Lewis 6-0, 6-1 at two. Four saw Stutz tally a 6-4, 6-0 over Shen before Shiffer recorded a hard-fought 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 victory over Dowd at three. Li tied the match at four apiece with a 6-2, 2-6, 6-3 victory over Lola Diaz at fifth singles and Kumaran clinched the match victory 6-7, 6-2, 6-1 over freshman Ananya Krishnan at six.

Vassar will travel to the West Coast to play in five matches in the state of California from March 5-11.
