Vassar Records 8-3 Road Victory Against Oneonta

ONEONTA – The Vassar College Baseball team used a five-run seventh inning to earn its third straight victory as the Brewers defeated Oneonta 8-3 on Saturday afternoon. Vassar’s record improves to 13-6 overall while the Red Dragons fall to 15-4 on the season.

After a scoreless first inning, sophomore Reid Lapekas and junior Jack Silvera singled back-to-back to open the second and Lapekas was driven in on a RBI groundout by junior Ty Murray to take a 1-0 lead. The Red Dragons answered in the bottom half of the inning on a two-out two-run homer from Nate Guillen to go ahead 2-1 after two.

Vassar tied the game at two in the fifth as senior Alex Warren singled with one out and then stole second. After advancing to third on a groundout, Warren scored on a wild pitch to score the second run of the game for the Brewers. Oneonta regained the lead in the bottom half of the inning as Jake Barrett singled with two outs followed by a walk to Anthony Foglia and a hit by pitch of Gregory Bandura. Alex Wurster knocked in Barrett with a single to right field with two outs to take a 3-2 lead.

The Brewers countered in the sixth as senior Adam Talwalkar singled to leadoff the inning and was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Lapekas. Murray then blasted a two-out double to score Talwalkar to tie it at three followed by pinch-hitter Jaden Millstein driving in Murray on a single to right center to take a 4-3 lead.

Vassar expanded its lead with a big inning in the seventh as sophomore Daniel Laderman drew a leadoff walk and was knocked home on a RBI double from senior Andrew Kanellis to make it 5-3. Silvera drove in Kanellis on a single to left and then Murray scored Lapekas, who reached on a HBP, on a single to push the lead to 7-3. Sophomore Ricardo Reyna laced a RBI single to left field to push across the fourth run of the inning to give Vassar a 8-3 lead after six and a half innings.

Senior Ryan Harris started on the mound for Vassar as he went four innings, allowing four hits, two runs, three walks and struck out three. Sophomore Pat Kerrigan earned the win in relief as he threw three innings and gave up two hits, one run, three walks and struck out three. Senior Bryce Grathwohl tossed two scoreless inning out of the pen for the Brewers.

Sean Liquori took the start for Oneonta as he went 4.2 innings and allowed five hits, two runs (one earned), four walks and struck out two. Kyle Roper took the loss in relief as he tossed 1.2 innings, allowing four hits, five runs, walked one and struck out two. Derek Shea threw two scoreless innings of relief and struck out two for the Red Dragons.

Murray finished with two hits and three RBI for Vassar while Warren and Silvera each tallied two hits. Reyna, Kanellis, Silvera and Millstein each recorded a RBI while Lapekas scored two runs. Joe Ottaviano went 3-for-4 for Oneonta while Barrett recorded two hits. Guillen drove in two runs on his home run while Wurster knocked in the other run for the Red Dragons.
