Newburgh Farmers’ Market Season Set

NEWBURGH – Common Ground Farm is pleased to announce the start of the 2023 Newburgh Farmers’ Market season on Saturday, May 6th. The market will be open every Saturday from 10 am-3 pm until November 18th offering a wide variety of local produce, including culturally significant options, in addition to eggs, fruit, meat, bread and more. The market will remain on the beautiful Safe Harbors Green, located at 97-107 Broadway, in Newburgh, New York.

The mission of the Newburgh Farmers’ Market is to feed and engage the Newburgh community, support local farms and businesses, and create a more just food system. Common Ground Farm looks forward to another season on the Safe Harbors Green as it is a central location for Newburgh’s population. It is accessible by public transportation with a bus stop on the corner of Broadway and Liberty St., and also next to the Ann Street municipal parking lot with free parking. It is also easily walkable from many of the city’s residential areas and along the bustling Liberty St. corridor.

Access to fresh, healthy food is one of the core tenets of Common Ground Farm’s food justice mission, and the Newburgh Farmers’ Market will enable greater food access through food benefit programs at the market. The Newburgh Farmers’ Market accepts SNAP/EBT, Double Up Food Bucks, Senior and WIC FMNP (Farmers Market Nutrition Program) coupons, and Fresh Connect checks for eligible products. Recipients of these food benefits are encouraged to stop by and talk with the market manager about how to use their benefits at the market. As an added bonus, the Newburgh Farmers’ Market will match the value of food benefits used at the market with our own Greens4Greens coupons. Greens4Greens are matched dollar for dollar with FMNP coupons, and customers using their SNAP benefits receive one Greens4Greens with each EBT transaction. Greens4Greens coupons can also be redeemed at the Beacon Farmers’ Market on Sundays. This enables customers to access fresh, local produce throughout the growing season in Newburgh.

In collaboration with Our Core, a youth urban agricultural program based at NFA North, the Newburgh Farmers’ Market has had an end-of-market donation program of unsold produce that is distributed to Newburgh-based food pantries and soup kitchens. Since 2019, the Newburgh Farmers’ Market has donated over 7,000 pounds of fresh, local produce through this partnership. The Newburgh Farmers Market also hosts interns from the Our Core program, where they are able to learn all aspects of managing a farmers market.

The Newburgh Farmers’ Market will be partnering with several organizations such as Compass Arts, Cornell Cooperative, the Newburgh Arts & Cultural Commission, Newburgh Creates, and others to bring programming for both children and adults to the market weekly. We will also be hosting workshops, teaching folks how to create a dish/meal based on products that can be bought at the farmers’ market as well as regular mending and repair events.

Common Ground Farm is pleased to announce that it was awarded a Farmers’ Market Resiliency Grant through the NYS Dept. of Agriculture and Markets for the Newburgh Farmers’ Market. The purpose of the grant is to “strengthen the market and make local food more available to consumers by establishing online sales, improving infrastructure, and expanding marketing and outreach efforts.” Common Ground Farm is also grateful for support from the Ogden Foundation. Their support has been vital to the Newburgh Farmers’ Market since 2019.

The Newburgh Farmers’ Market is still accepting applications for vendors and will continue to accept applications on a rolling basis. In particular, we wish to support a diverse community of makers working within the City of Newburgh and regional under-represented farm producers.
