Marist Red Foxes Down San Diego For First Time

POUGHKEEPSIE – The Marist football team earned a 30-16 victory over San Diego in a Pioneer Football League game at Tenney Stadium on Saturday.

Re-al Mitchell’s 49-yard touchdown run on a third-and-one gave San Diego a 7-0 lead with 12:14 left in the second quarter.

Marist tied the game at the 8:48 mark of the second period thanks to a 17-yard touchdown pass from Brock Bagozzi to Trevor Sterry.

The Red Foxes took their first lead with 1:23 left until halftime on a 19-yard touchdown run by Amin Woods.

On the play after Justin Iaccio recovered a fumble on a dropped punt snap, Bagozzi found Woods for a 15-yard touchdown pass with 21 seconds left in the first half. Marist took a 21-7 halftime lead.

With San Diego traveling early in the third quarter, Nick Vecchiarelli intercepted a pass and returned it 97 yards for a touchdown to give Marist a 28-7 lead.

Aidan Lehman’s 27-yard field goal cut Marist’s lead to 28-10 with 4:05 left in the third quarter.

Isaiah Smith’s 13-yard touchdown reception from Grant Sergent brought the Toreros to within 12 at 28-16 with 12:30 left in the fourth.

With 6:47 left, the ball was snapped out of the end zone on a San Diego punt, resulting in a safety and giving Marist a 30-16 lead. This accounted for the game’s final points.

Marist is now 3-3 on the season and 3-1 in the PFL. The Red Foxes have won three straight in league play.

Marist plays the first of back-to-back road games when the Red Foxes face Presbyterian in Clinton, South Carolina on Saturday, Oct. 21.
