High School Swim Team Captures Championship

POUGHKEEPSIE – Poughkeepsie Varsity Girls Swim Team 2023 captured the Conference 4 Championship title on Saturday October 21, 2023- a title that was last held in 1994.

The team consists of 26 young ladies, two of whom are seniors. Team captain and senior Linsay Perez and senior Lluvia Martinez both have competed in year-round swimming with Coach Galen’s swim program Mid-Hudson Aquatics. The team win is a reflection of Coach Galen’s selfless dedication and consistent efforts in 35 years to create opportunities for learning to swim and to compete in swimming in the City of Poughkeepsie.

The Poughkeepsie swimmers have embraced their sport long before there were any wins. Their tireless efforts to change the course of swimming in their community has truly come to fruition with this long-awaited victory. It takes not just a village, but a pool as well to realize some of the untapped potential that has made its way to the top after 30 years.

Special recognition to Renata Martinez who is Poughkeepsie’s most valuable point scorer with a chance at Sectionals for the 50 free and 100 fly. Congratulations to the swimmers who placed in the relays at championships: Renata Martinez, Jocelyn Rojas, Beverly Ruiz, Yana Perez, Allyson Perez, Paulina Olivarez and Camila Perez.
