Mt. Vernon Hosts 2023 Lights On After School Rally

MOUNT VERNON – In a heartwarming display of community support and commitment to youth enrichment, the Mount Vernon Youth Bureau, in collaboration with the Mount Vernon Recreation Department, recently hosted its Annual Lights On After School rally on the steps of City Hall. This event, which took place in the spirit of Lights on After School, a nationwide initiative created in October 2000 by The After School Alliance, highlighted the essential role of after-school programs in students’ lives. The event featured demonstrations from several after-school programs, including boxing, capoeira, basketball, baseball, and more.

Across the United States, after-school programs play a vital role for many families. These quality programs offer young individuals opportunities to explore new activities, acquire fresh skills, and broaden their horizons. From engaging in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) activities to participating in community service and even developing career readiness skills or practicing taekwondo, these programs are invaluable in shaping well-rounded individuals.

Lights on After School, which has gained immense popularity since its inception, is a testament to the significant impact of after-school programs. What started with about 1,200 participants has now grown to encompass over 1,000,000 people celebrating the value of after-school programs in 2023. It’s a heartwarming reminder of how these programs positively influence the lives of students, their families, and the broader communities they serve. The annual rally at City Hall symbolizes the dedication of Mount Vernon and countless other communities across the nation to invest in the future of our youth.
