NEWBURGH – Rebirth. Renaissance. A special place to be.

These are just a few of the ways newly sworn-in City of Newburgh Mayor, Torrance Harvey referred to the place he calls home and led over for several years and will continue to do so in 2024. Harvey, along with two City of Newburgh Councilmembers At-Large: Omari Shakur and Robert McLymore, Sr. (who had previously taken an oath for his position), once again placed one hand on the Bible, while raising the other, agreeing to faithfully and honestly carry out their duties.

They are responsibilities not taken lightly. They are also privileges that remain hopeful, exciting, as the City of Newburgh finds itself on the brink of transition toward better, more prosperous, harmonious times.

“The City of Newburgh is a microcosm of what we see around the world; we celebrate diversity here, something that permeates, schools, businesses, everywhere,” said Harvey following his swearing-in. “We are very proud of our differences, celebrating them, and knowing it’s what makes Newburgh such a special place.”

Harvey, who was surrounded by his wife and two of his children and was recently wrapping up his fourth round of the election process, was beaming with pride, as he continued, relaying the lofty, but rewarding responsibility of helping steer the City of Newburgh ship toward an even brighter future.

“It is our responsibility to make sure all voices are heard here, restoring this City to world class is our objective,” affirmed Harvey. “Whatever it is: fair housing, environment issues, we will do that.” The newly sworn-in Mayor concluded, “Thank you to all of my colleagues, the public and my family for coming out tonight to this very auspicious occasion.”
