$500K to Improve Newburgh Streets

NEWBURGH – Last Thursday, Assemblymember Jonathan Jacobson (D-Newburgh) was joined by Newburgh city officials to announce $500,000 in funding for roadwork in the City of Newburgh, including street paving, sidewalk replacement, and ADA-compliance work.
“Having high quality paved roads has always been a priority to me,” said Jacobson. He continued, “It’s one of the most important factors in determining the quality of life in a community.”

Jacobson so believed that roads are such a high priority that he made it a campaign promise and posted numerous lawn signs throughout the community when he first ran for public office. “When I was on the Newburgh City Council I proposed a resolution to have a plan to fix all the streets, which the city is now implementing,” Jacobson said. “I also pushed to make sure that Newburgh takes advantage of all funding from the state, which they weren’t doing.”

That encouragement led to last Thursday’s announcement of $500,000 for paving, “which can be used in any way. I think that it is important that we do this for the quality of life in the city,” Jacobson said.

City of Newburgh Mayor Torrance Harvey was thrilled with the news. “The entire city is excited any time Assemblyman Jacobson shows up in general,” Harvey said. “But we are extremely happy when he shows up with a check for our streets. It is almost like Christmas before Halloween. We are excited about this wonderful gift.”

Officials said the funding will be utilized for the rehabilitation of North Street and Hampton Place, including curbs, ADA ramps, and sidewalks.
