Mount Softball Unable to Walk Away With A Win At WestConn

DANBURY, Conn. – The Mount Saint Mary College softball team was bested by Western Connecticut in their doubleheader.

Game 1
Mount Saint Mary College traveled to Danbury, Connecticut, to face WestConn in a makeup doubleheader from earlier in the week. The Knights started off strong with Grace Reich and Autumn Strobach singling to put 2 runners on and no outs. With the bases loaded, the Wolves would escape with no harm done after forcing 2 straight outs. The bottom half of the 1st started with an error from the Mount, and from there, WestConn would score 3 runs this inning, then add another to go up 4-0 after two. Grace Reich led off the top of the 3rd with a double, then advanced to third off a wild pitch. She would be left stranded, though, as the Knights could not bring her in to score.

The Wolves continued to add to their lead, going up 8-0 in the bottom of the 4th. In her first appearance of the season, Dana Donnelly would walk to start the 5th inning. A couple of walks loaded the bases, which allowed Grace MacDonald to hit a grand slam for her first homer of the season. With the offense getting going, the Knights were still unable to stop WestConn on defense, allowing 2 more runs in the bottom half of the inning. MacDonald tallied her 5th RBI of the game, scoring Grace Reich from third. 3 more runs for the Wolves in the 6th put the mercy rule into effect as Mount Saint Mary would lose game one 13-5.

Game 2
The Knights looked to respond in game 2 and come away with a split. Mount Saint Mary would go 1-2-3 to start the game, and WestConn continued where they left off, scoring in the bottom of the 1st to take a 1-0 lead. In the 2nd, the Wolves added another 4 runs to extend their lead to 5-0. The Knights drew 3 walks in the top of the 3rd to load the bases, giving them an opportunity to get back in the game, but nothing would come of it.

In the top of the 4th, Allie Kenney would get the Mounts’ first hit of the game to put 2 runners on base after Grace Terpening was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. A double play ended their hopes of scoring as the Knights were still scoreless. They were going to have to score soon, as WestConn went up 8-0 in the bottom half of the inning. With their final chance to extend the game in the 5th inning, Mount Saint Mary was unable to get on the scoreboard and lost the game 8-0 in 5 innings.
