STATEN ISLAND – The Marist University football team earned a 21-10 non-league victory at Wagner on Saturday.
Coupled with Marist’s season-opening win over New Haven, this marks the first time the Red Foxes have defeated two full scholarship programs in a season.
On Marist’s second drive, Sonny Mannino threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to Connor Hulstein at the 6:23 mark of the first quarter. This culminated a 10-play, 67-yard drive in 2:35.
Wagner tied the game at seven following a two-yard touchdown run by Andre Hines with 37 seconds left in the first quarter. The score remained 7-7 at the end of the first quarter.
Nicholas Romero’s 31-yard field goal gave Wagner a 10-7 lead with 5:22 left in the first half, but Tristan Shannon returned the ensuing kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown. The score remained 14-10 in favor of Marist at halftime.
On Wagner’s first drive of the second half, Jalen Carpenter and Nate Robinson Jr. made a stop on fourth-and-one from the Marist 10 to preserve the Red Foxes’ four-point lead. Marist maintained its 14-10 advantage after three quarters.
On fourth-and-goal from the Wagner one, Will O’Dell’s found Carter James for a touchdown, as Marist extended its lead to 21-10 with 4:38 left.
After a bye week, Marist returns to action with its Pioneer Football League opener at Butler on Saturday, Sept. 27.
