POUGHKEEPSIE – The Marist University football team rolled to a 41-13 victory over Stetson in a Pioneer Football League contest at Tenney Stadium on Saturday.
The Red Foxes had four touchdowns cover at least 30 yards, and scored 38 points over a span of 15:26 in the first half. The 38 points in a half is believed to have tied a school record, and it is the most points the Red Foxes have scored in a half this century.
Samer Layous opened the scoring with a 23-yard field goal at the 2:24 mark of the first quarter. This concluded a nine-play, 80-yard drive.
On Stetson’s next drive, Jace Williamson intercepted a pass and returned it 45 yards for a touchdown. The Red Foxes maintained their 10-0 lead after the first quarter.
At the 13:58 mark of the second quarter, Sonny Mannino connected with Connor Hulstein on a 78-yard touchdown pass to give Marist a 17-0 lead.
Mannino’s 49-yard touchdown run staked Marist to a 24-0 lead at the 8:11 mark of the second quarter.
Mannino found Lance Martinez for a 36-yard touchdown pass 59 seconds later to run the lead to 31-0.
Mannino’s three-yard rushing score at the 1:58 mark lifted Marist to a 38-0 advantage.
Stetson got on the scoreboard on a seven-yard touchdown pass from Kale Alexander to Beau Bankston with two seconds left in the half. Marist took a 38-7 lead to the locker room.
Layous hit a 46-yard field goal to cap Marist’s first drive of the second half. The Red Foxes led 41-7 after three quarters.
Cayden Betts’ two-yard rushing touchdown with 48 seconds left closed out the scoring.
Marist is now 4-6 on the season and 2-4 in PFL play.
Marist hosts Davidson for its final home game of the season on Saturday, Nov. 15.
