Newburgh Awarded $2 Million For A Playground

NEWBURGH – The City of Newburgh has received $2 million in state funding from Governor Kathy Hochul’s New York Places for Learning, Activity, and Youth Socialization (NY PLAYS) grant to renovate the Delano-Hitch Recreation Park to become a destination playground.

In partnership with New City Parks, a nonprofit that designs and constructs parks and playgrounds, families in Newburgh and beyond will have a welcoming and accessible outdoor space for children of all abilities to play, be active and connect with one another.

Located beside the newly opened Aquatic Center, the proposed playground design envisions into seven zones: a Welcome Garden, main arrival plaza; a Toddler Village, play area for young children; a central playground for elementary-aged children; a sensory trail; music area with chimes and drums; a swing garden; and a central gathering lawn. The new playground will incorporate natural elements and be designed for play in all seasons. Most significantly, the play space will be broadly accessible with ADA-compliant amenities and inclusive sensory, physical, and social play features for those with autism spectrum conditions or sensory processing differences.

The City of Newburgh and New City Parks are looking forward to working with Dormitory Authority of the State of New York to begin the next steps in implementing the grant-funded project.
