
GENEVA – The Vassar College Field Hockey team fell on the road in conference action on Sunday afternoon as the Brewers suffered a 4-2 setback against William Smith. Vassar’s record moves to 6-4 overall and 1-1 in league play while the Herons improve to 5-7 overall and 1-1 in conference action.
William Smith struck first with seven minutes left in the first quarter on a goal from Mia Batchelder off a feed from Eliza Freeland.
VC earned a corner with five minutes to go in the quarter as sophomore Sophia Jammar’s shot was stopped by Olivia Terranova.
The Herons lead doubled to 2-0 just over two minutes into the second period on Freeland’s sixth goal of the season off a pass from Kylee Knuschke.
Ana Dios Vidal’s third goal of the season expanded the lead to 3-0 prior to the halftime break.
Vassar cut into the deficit two and a half minutes into the fourth quarter on junior Zoe Robinson’s first goal of the season off an assist from sophomore Julia Morris.
William Smith pushed its lead back to three goals at 4-1 on Caroline Kogut’s goal with six minutes left off a corner from Leah Griffith and Dios Vidal.
Vassar added its second goal of the campaign in the final minute of regulation as first year Langdon Chu scored her first collegiate goal from sophomore Autumn Dowiak.
For The Brewers
Robinson and Chu each tallied their first goals of the season while Morris collected her first assist of the campaign.
Dowiak added an assist while Jammar, sophomore Remy Phan and senior Karina Hoffman each added a shot on goal.
Senior Anna Hazewindus earned her third defensive save of the season.
First year Kendra Pitts took the loss in goal and made four saves in 22 minutes of action while senior Grace Wiley made two saves in 38 minutes in net.
For The Herons
Freeland, Batchelder, Kogut and Dios Vidal each scored a goal while Griffith, Freeland, Knuschke and Dios Vidal all recorded an assist.
Terranova earned the win in goal and made two saves while Kogut notched a defensive save.
