SCHENECTADY – Sophomore Zoe Robinson scored her ninth goal of the season, junior Grace Wiley made eight saves and senior Sofia Beseth scored the eventual game-winning goal in the third quarter to send the Vassar College Field Hockey team to a 2-1 road conference victory over Union on Sunday afternoon. The Brewers improve to 7-4 overall and 2-0 in Liberty League action while the Garnet Chargers drop to 6-6 on the season and 1-1 in conference play.
Union dominated the chances in the first quarter as the Garnet Chargers earned eight corners in the first 15 minutes.
Vassar’s defense limited Union to just four shots as Wiley made a save on the lone shot on target in the period.
Following saves from Wiley on shots from Rowan Dapson and Maddie Greco to begin the second quarter, Vassar struck first with the ninth goal of the season from Robinson on an assist from Beseth with 11 minutes left in the half.
Wiley turned away three more Garnet Charger shots in the final three minutes of the first half to keep the Brewers in front 1-0 at the halftime intermission.
Beseth’s fifth goal of the season came halfway through the third period to put Vassar ahead for good with a 2-0 advantage.
Union cut the lead in half just a minute and four seconds into the final quarter on a tally from Rachel Ostiguy off an assist from Maddie Greco.
The Garnet Chargers final chance came with 48 seconds in the game as Wiley made her eighth save of the game on a shot from Ostiguy.
For The Brewers
Robinson’s goal marked her ninth of the season and increased her team-leading point total to 18.
Beseth finished with a goal and an assist, which now puts her tied for second in goals with five and second on the squad in points with 12.
First year Sophia Jammar recorded two shots along with first year Autumn Dowiak adding two shots, including one on goal.
Wiley tied her season-high in saves with eight and picked up the seventh win of the season.
For The Garnet Chargers
Ostiguy recorded two shots on net and scored the lone goal and Greco added a shot on net and picked up an assist.
Dapson, Halliday and Vytopilova all registered two shots on goal.
Sophie Brady made two saves in goal in the loss in 45 minutes of action while Tess Parker made one save in a quarter in goal.
