Sheri Stumpf Named October’s Citizen of the Month

GOSHEN – Orange County Executive Steven M. Neuhaus has announced that Sheri Stumpf, a breast cancer survivor and Town of Newburgh resident, has been recognized as Orange County’s Citizen of the Month for October for her exceptional advocacy, inspirational leadership, and steadfast commitment to promoting breast cancer awareness throughout the Hudson Valley.

“Sheri’s dedication to the fight against breast cancer has touched so many lives here in Orange County,” said Neuhaus. “As the 2026 Ambassador for Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Hudson Valley, she uses her own experience to remind others about the importance of early detection and to encourage more people to access lifesaving 3‑D mammography. Her strength and positivity truly make a difference in our community.”

Both of Sheri’s Stage 0 breast cancer diagnoses, in 2018 and 2024, were detected early thanks to 3‑D mammography, a technology she now champions.

“My best two tools for success are simple,” Stumpf said. “Number one: have a positive attitude. Number two: get your annual 3‑D mammogram. You need to look at your annual mammogram as a gift you give to yourself and to your family and loved ones. I encourage you to never let that appointment be overdue.”

Inspired by her late mother, Sheri founded her Making Strides team, Positively Pink, which has grown from two walkers to more than 30 under her leadership. The team has raised over $30,00 from 2022 to 2025 through yard sales and community events and outreach supporting breast cancer research. The 2026 team goal is set at $10,000, and at this point they are halfway there.

As Ambassador, she has shared her story at multiple Making Strides events and continues to promote early detection across the region.

Sheri’s outreach extends far beyond her team. “As Team Leader of Positively Pink, I’ve sent more than 30 handwritten notes to women who have been diagnosed with breast cancer, or who are currently going through treatment,” she said. She often includes Positively Pink T-shirts and follow‑up messages of encouragement, reaching residents not only in New York but also in states as far as Colorado, Florida, Illinois, New Hampshire, New Jersey, and Maine.

“Sheri brings so much hope, strength, and compassion to everyone she meets on their cancer journey,” said Kristi Greco, Senior Manager, Events of the American Cancer Society. “Her dedication to uplifting others and her commitment to promoting lifesaving cancer screenings make a real difference throughout the Hudson Valley.”

Stumpf’s message, “Leave a sparkle of hope everywhere you go,” reflects the spirit of the Citizen of the Month Award. “I’m honored to receive this recognition, and I hope my story encourages others to get screened and know they’re not alone,” she said.

“Sheri has shown how powerful it is when someone uses their own experience to help lift others,” said Neuhaus. “Her dedication to early detection and support for survivors is making a lasting impact here in Orange County.”
