Marist Comes Up Short of Comeback win Against Canisius

By Kendrick Mooney

BUFFALO – Marist volleyball started the match down two sets and crawled back to force a fifth set. But the Red Foxes ultimately fell to Canisius 3-2, dropping their overall record to 11-11 and 8-4 in conference play.

Marist started well early on in the first set but started to struggle down the way. The Red Foxes finished with five service errors, killing any offensive momentum they started to develop. Canisius took the first set 25-15.

Both teams played pretty evenly to start the set until Canisius put together a string of kills to take 15-9 lead. After a Marist time out, the Golden Griffins continued their offensive performance, taking the set 25-17.

Skylar Harrison came in hot in the third set, landing a kill and back to back blocks to give Marist a 10-5 lead. Canisius made it a two point set but Marist started clicking and led by as much as eight points before claiming a 25-21 set win.

Canisius took an early set lead but Marist reclaimed it at 9-8 thanks to a big block from Chidera Udeh and Taylor van der Biezen. The set looked in hand for Marist after a kill from Megan Fergus at 24-21, but a pair of error from Marist helped tie it up. A kill from Sarah Austin and an attack error from Canisius helped get the Red Foxes out of the jam as they took the set 27-25.

The Golden Griffins took a lead early on and never relinquished it. Fergus had a couple of big plays that kept the Red Foxes in the set, but the team ultimately dropped it 15-9.

The Red Foxes close out home play against Rider and Saint Peters this weekend. Both matches will start at 1 p.m.
