Vassar Women’s Tennis Victorious at Union

SCHENECTADY – Vassar used a strong singles effort and a pair of doubles wins to defeat Union on the road on Saturday at the Union Tennis Courts. The Brewers remain perfect on the season and are now 3-0 (3-0 LL), while the Dutchwomen slip to 2-2 overall (2-2 LL).

Union opened the morning match with the first point as Gracie Nicol and Cathy Xing combined to post an 8-1 win over Vassar juniors Sara Ehnstrom and Nicole Pihlstrom from three. The Brewers battled back as junior captain Melina Stavropoulos and sophomore Tatum Blalock bested Megan Brown and Marilena Karadimou from one, 8-3. VC locked up the 2-1 lead from two as rookie Sofie Shen and junior Cara Kizilbash defeatd Sophie Brown and Dana D’Onofrio, 8-5.

Heading into singles action, the Dutchwomen tied things up at five as D’Onofrio posted a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Ehnstrom. Once again, VC battled back with Shen defeating Brown at three, 6-0, 6-2 for the 3-2 advantage.

Stavropoulos then made it a 4-2 advantage for the Brewers from two, posting a 6-4, 6-2 win against Karadimou. Union pulled it to 4-3 in the next match as Xing earned a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Pihlstom at six.

But Vassar once again recovered as Kizilbash gutted out a 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 win against Nicol from four to secure match point, while Blalock earned a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Brown from one to wrap up the action for the day.

These same two teams return to action on Wednesday when Vassar hosts Union at 4pm on Josselyn Courts. A reminder that at this time, spectators are not allowed at Vassar home contests. Additionally, individuals who are not currently part of Vassar’s campus are not allowed on-campus at this time.
