Lane Scores Twice in a Victory Over Stevens

POUGHKEEPSIE – Junior Ryan Lane helped lead the Vassar men’s soccer team to a 2-0 victory against Stevens on Saturday afternoon at Gordon Field. Lane scored the opening goal at the 7th minute and then scored again at the 54th minute as the Brewers move to 3-1. Meanwhile, Stevens falls to 2-1-1.

After a few early shot attempts from Stevens, Vassar went on the attack. Lane collected the ball on the right side of the Ducks’ net, and his initial shot was blocked. He collected his rebound and then chipped the shot in past the goalkeeper. The Vassar defense did not slump in the first half either, just allowing one Stevens shot.

Lane scored again following a long pass from first-year Brandon Liu. Lane cut past the Stevens defender and fired the ball into the left corner to put the Brewers up 2-0. Now playing from behind, Stevens nearly subbed its entire team to get some fresh energy in. At the 74th minute, Sean Ryan hit the post, and then a Stevens’ offside call cut any momentum.

In the final minutes, the Ducks had a few chances, launching three shots at goalkeeper Eric Wnorowski. The junior dug in and made the stops to earn the shutout. Wnorowski went on to finish with three saves.

Stevens held a slight 9-3 shot advantage, and corners were tied 4-4.

Vassar is home again on Wed. Sept. 15 to host cross-river rival New Paltz at 4 p.m. on Gordon Field.
