Marist Women’s Basketball Defeats Monmouth

POUGHKEEPSIE – The Marist women’s basketball returned to the win column with a 71-53 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference victory against the Monmouth Hawks Saturday evening at McCann Arena. With the win, the Red Foxes move to 4-9 overall and 2-3 in conference. Monmouth is now 7-5 overall and 2-1 in MAAC play.

Monmouth had three consecutive turnovers to start the first quarter, allowing Marist to take the lead 18-13.

Zaria Shazer scored 10-of-the-18 points for the Red Foxes in the first quarter. In the second quarter, Zaria eclipsed her previous career high of 14 points, scoring 16. She also collected six rebounds.

After entering the half leading 34-27, Monmouth battled back in the third quarter with a 7-0 run to tie the game at 34.

The teams would trade mini-runs until the 3:07 mark in the third where Marist went on an 8-0 run to pull ahead 51-40.

Entering the fourth, Marist would build on its lead, with an 11-0 run spanning from 7:16 to 3:22, pushing the lead to 20.From there the Red Foxes would cruise to the 71-53 victory.

The Red Foxes continue conference play on the road at Iona Thursday, January 20th against Iona Gaels.
