Students at the Career and Technical Institute at Dutchess BOCES and the Stissing Mountain Junior/Senior High School in Pine Plains were introduced to the growing career opportunities in the energy sector, particularly in electric transmission, on October 26 during classroom presentations by representatives from New York Transco.
New York Transco is a Hudson-based developer, owner and operator of bulk electric power transmission lines and stations in New York State. Transmission is the backbone of the energy delivery network, carrying and modulating high-voltage electricity between where it is generated and the local distribution systems that service homes, businesses, and schools. Two of New York Transco’s current projects are in parts of Dutchess County, including the New York Energy Solution transmission system modernization, and the Dover Station Project, a proposed new substation in the town of Dover.
Speaking to the students as part of national Careers in Construction Month were Senior Project Manager Lisa Kettle, a civil and environmental engineer, and Transmission Line Construction Inspector Mike Englishby, a 37-year veteran of the energy industry.
“Careers in Construction Month brought New York Transco to the Career and Technical Institute (CIT) at Dutchess BOCES to present and have a discussion with our Construction and Electrical classes to assist in building further interest and insight to the many opportunities for our students in energy careers,” said Sharon Myers, job placement specialist and work-based learning coordinator at CIT. “The students were interested in the information they shared. Knowing choices that are available to them help them get excited for their futures.”
“The clean energy transformation that is taking place across New York State and throughout the country is creating many new career opportunities for high school and college graduates alike,” said New York Transco President Vic Mullin. “We love introducing our exciting field to local students, and we congratulate Dutchess BOCES and Stissing Mountain for taking a leadership role in opening the door to these opportunities.”
The New York Energy Solution and Dover Station projects are important New York transmission system upgrades to aid the State in meeting its goals of 70 percent renewable energy by 2030 and a 100 percent emissions-free energy sector by 2040.
